Tools and safety. This PDF course is not a substitute for a hands-on power-tool class. Read your tool’s manual. Wear eye and hearing protection, use appropriate dust protection and dust control, and secure your work. Be aware of kickback. Stop if a step is beyond your beginner skill, or if you are tired, rushed or unsure.

Materials and assembly. Measure the board in your hands: a nominal 2x4 is typically 1.5 × 3.5 in (38 × 89 mm). Dry-fit before you glue. Use exterior-rated fasteners and finishes outdoors.

Furniture safety. Anchor tall or top-heavy furniture with hardware suited to your wall. Fit an appropriate lid support to a blanket chest; it is not designed as a toy box.
